"False Idols Shall Burn"

So I've decided that I am going to postpone my post on worship. Instead I want to just, more or less, regurgitate what yesterday's chapel speaker said.

The focus of his message was on anything that we put in place of where God should be in our lives. A few weeks ago, I was bored and so I was watching Drake and Josh, which isn't a usual choice for me, however there was a very interesting scene in the episode. Drake gets this guitar signed by his favorite guitarist, and so he is admiring it and pretty much in love with the thing. Then Drake asked Josh to watch the guitar, which he does, until Miranda comes in and asks why it is so special, eventually they plug the guitar into an amp and the guitar lights on fire. I thought this was kind of funny so I started texting Eddie about it, and I mentioned that it was a squier, so it was okay. His initial response was "false idols shall burn." This phrase changed my whole outlook on the episode, as well as wrapped my brain for weeks. IT came back to my mind when this week's speaker started speaking on this verse.

"But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith." Phillipians 3:7-9 (NIV)

He highlighted the word rubbish, in verse 8, some translations say garbage. The speaker was stating the the direct translation of this word is close to the equivalence of crap, and literally waste product not today's usual connotation. Too often we find ourselves saved and claiming to follow Christ, but then later playing with this rubbish. Really, what fun is it to play with our poop? It just gets all over the place, and makes people not like us. (Run with the metaphor.) Lust, greed, sex, porn, anger, gossip, slander, pride, jealousy, whatever, get rid of it, it's just not worth it. Consider it lost! Because of Christ it is, now let go of it.

What is the rubbish in your life that is causing a space between you an God? What are you holding on to that you should consider lost? Furthermore, what false idols do you have in your life?

I've always been slightly fond of asking and contemplating this last question. What is it in your life that is preventing you from worshiping God the way that he wants you to?
