Oh wait, it's too late for that. Christmas was ruined as soon as we took Christ from being the head figure of the holiday and replaced him with a jolly fat man in a red suit. Someone got upset with me the other day for saying something about St. Nicholas, and I have nothing wrong with him. However, I think that even he, being a Saint and all, wouldn't want the glory at all to go to him but rather to remain on Christ.
I'm curious why do people who do not believe in, or want nothing to do with Christ celebrate CHRISTmas? I usually do not attend the birthday parties of people that I don't have a relationship with. I just feel like Christmas is no more than the same songs over and over again, new gifts and a forgotten saviour.
We've taken Christ out of Christmas, yet for some reason it's offensive to say Merry Christmas. Christmas has become about giving gifts, and getting gifts. I am sick of hearing that Christmas is about giving. The other night we had a gift exchange and I felt bad because I didn't think I had good enough gifts to give. Giving gifts does not even come close to what Christmas should be about. As much as I loved looking for gifts to give some of the best friends I have, I also didn't find anywhere near the joy that I get from Jesus Christ. What Christ did was amazing, but we've made Christmas about everything except for his birth. Christmas is about giving, but it's about Christ giving his life.
I'm not knocking the giving and receiving of gifts. I think that is an awesome tradition as look as we think of the gifts that it mirrors. First and foremost, the gift of salvation that Christian's have been granted. The giving of gifts encourages us to be selfless, as well as spend time with our families and friends, I think that is amazing. However, I think it's horrible that we give everyone a gift except for Christ on Christmas. I know some people who give a special offering, exceeding their normal tithe, at Christmas time. I personally have a tradition to read the real Christmas story every year, the first two chapter of Luke are the extended birth story. I also try to spend time in worship on Christmas. I don't personally do the whole extended offering because God doesn't need my money, he owns the cattle on a thousand hills. If you do that, right on, I'm not against it. He also doesn't need my worship. However, I feel that it's something that I can sincerely give. Let's put Christ back into Christmas, he kinda deserves it.
Happy Birthday Jesus.
